Re: A comment about the meteorite trade.

Frank, thanks for the comments about the meteorite trade. I have a few
additional comments. I have a friend who recently purchase a meteorite
from a farmer, here in Colorado. He subsequently lent it to a museum
(will remain unnamed) for casting, analysis, and so on. That was 4
months ago. He has not gotten his meteorite back yet, which is a major
concern. So, he finds out that the museum is apparently checking the
land status of the area, not only in 1997 but 50-100 years ago as well,
to see if the state of Colorado owned it. Why? I believe it is to
re-posess the meteorite! Which I believe is totally wrong. Seems to me
that some, note I say SOME, museums are bcoming stingy, partly because
of the antics of dealers like Ron Farrell...and they have a right to.
But back to my point. Without people like my friend, Bob Haag, Luc
Labenne and others like them, museums may NEVER see ANY meteorites!
Dealers and collectors should work with museums and vice versa, for the
better of the meteorite collecting community. Sadly, I do not see this
happening very much, it will only hurt, not help. My friend was going to
practically give 12lbs of his 25lb meteorite to the museum for NOTHING.
Museums should not try to confiscate meteorites from prople, especially
since ALOT of material in museums doesn't rightfully belong to them
either (i.e. Horse Creek, Mesa Verde). Thanks for your time....
Best Regards,

Matt Morgan
