Hello Bill, hello Peter, hello List!

There are two Johnson County meteorites:

01) The Venus (H4d)* ordinary chondrite: * d = shock facies

U.S.A., Texas, Johnson County
32° 24' N / 097° 05.4’ W
Find 1960
1013g
Main mass in possession of finder
89g, Fort Worth, Texas, Monnig Colln.

The main mass, weighing 1013 g, was found by Mr. Scott Jackson 1 ½ miles
south of Venus, Johnson County, Texas. The discovery occurred in 1960
when the specimen was caught in a cotton stripping machine and the owner
noted that the rock was different from the cretaceous rocks found
locally. An 89.3 g end slice was given to Oscar Monnig for
classification in 1968; the main mass still resides with the original
discoverer.

For more (petrographic) details, see:

EHLMANN A.J. et al. (1987) Classification of a second group of ordinary
chondrites from Texas (Meteoritics 22, 17-23).

02) The Cleburne IVA iron: Octahedrite, fine (0.29mm)
U.S.A., Texas, Johnson County
32° 19' N / 097° 25' W
Find 1907
6800 gr
6.5kg, Fort Worth, Texas, Monnig Colln.

A mass of 6.8kg, found in 1907, was recognized as meteoritic in 1934,
A.D. Nininger, Pop. Astron., Northfield, Minnesota, 1937, 45, p.449
(M.A. 7-62). Classification, analysis, 8.8 %Ni, 2.3 ppm Ga, 0.13 ppm Ge,
1.8 ppm Ir, J.T. Wasson et al., GCA, 1989, 53, p.735.

03) Peter is right. Johnson County is also a synonym for the IIIA Cabin
Creek iron.

Best wishes, Bernd
