Was the cow falsely blamed

Last night on TV there was a program "Fire in the Sky." With amoung other
people was Gene Shoemaker and David Levy, talking about Jupiter and other
meteorite and comet hits.
My real question is that during the program they said that the Great Chicago
Fire was actually caused by a meteorite hit. This theory was developed when
it was noticed that 2 or 3 other great fires started at the same time. In
fact one fire hit a town and the residents said that it was like raining
fire from the sky. In this fire 1200 people died and there is a mass grave
because some of the people could not be identified.
Is this a new theory or have I been spending too much time watching X-Files.
