Vatican Collection

Hello David and List,

At the 1997 American Association for the Advancement of Science convention
in Seattle, there was a major break-out session on the purported nanofossils
in ALH84001. Chris Romanek defended the McKay team's findings. John
Kerridge presented the opposing point of view -- and also urged space probes
and sample return missions instead of more money for researching meteorites.
And, surprising, the head of the Vatican Observatory (yes, they have a fine
one with real scientists along with a great meteorite collection!) presented
the perspective that
finding life in meteorites is a scientific question and does not threaten
organized religion or one's belief (or non-belief) in God. He then went on
to discuss some of the scientific evidence and seemed to weigh in more on
Romanek's side than Kerridge's - though he said he wasn't taking sides.

List members,
Why does the Vatican have one of the best meteorite collections in the
world? Do they support the scientific theories of meteorites or do they
simply represent miraculous stones from the heavens? It seems like an
oxymoron to me. Any comments?
David
