Good statement Lou.  I also believe it is unwise to assume that impacts caused
all mass-extinctions. Being involved in impact crater research, I usually look
for signs of biological disruption, and in most cases we find localized
extinctions that do not correlate globally.  There are many other causes for
extinctions, such as volcanic eruption (voluminous flood basalts have an amazing
correlation to a few mass-extinctions, as do impacts), glacial episodes, plate
movement, eustacy...you get the point.  It would be silly to assume impacts are
always harbingers of death...
