|Hi Julia,
|
|I think you have missed the point. If you are going to open up the media to
|the public for public discussion then you can hardly whinge when the public
|want to discuss something that is either not to your liking or against your
|personal beliefs.

I completely agree with you.

However, you have interjected a false assumption in your initial premise to
suit your needs and then argue the point as if we are in a public forum with
any topic open to discussion.

|
|I do. Do you not?
|
The list administrator has implemented some parameters for keeping spam off
the list, for the most part. You seem to keep forgetting that we are
discussing the list here.

|>I would love to discuss the X-Files but I daresay, that should not be
|tolerated on this list.
|
|Oh no! ANYTHING but the X-Files! Now, what were you saying about getting
|people taken off this list ;-)
|
Yes, I know. It is sooooo over. However, I am quite glad that you
responded because I would like to point out that we are talking about two
different categories regarding the topics mentioned by Eric:

1. NASA bashing
2. Pseudo-science
Both of these seem to be inextricably linked with untold numbers of
ubiquitous conspiracy theories, as well as being quite pervasive throughout
the internet and available to everyone on the meteorite list if they choose.
It is so prevalent that the Microsoft Network used to have it on their home
page as one of the
5 or so main topics. It was called Watchfire and taunted the user with Area
51, UFO's, Join the discussion, etc. I think they still have it, but
they've cleaned up their
opening page now.

With regard to NASA bashing, I suspect NASA is a big boy and can take care
of itself. With regard to the other topics, I am on record for posting a
Mutiny on the Meteorite List, wanting to expand the acceptable subject
matter to astrophysics, etc. (It had always seemed odd that
Ron Baalke often posted intriquing tidbits that were not related to
meteorites and the list rules prevented us, well, most of us:-), from
discussing what he had posted. Finally, the atmosphere is right and these
boundaries are flimsy and easily penetrable for discussion. I'd still like
to see a wider range of multidisiplinary discussions, but I'm not going to
push it. At least we can now include astrophysics , astrobiology, solar
system formation, etc. which used to be a no-no.

I have drawn the line that you ask about at pseudo-science, but it is quite
trendy, idiotic and interesting to a certain degree. If the list wants to
include this sort of material, so be it. In fact, I'll
start with a question that has always made me wonder and yet is somewhat
self-contained as well. Area 51 is in New Mexico. Where are the first
50 areas:-)? OK, I know. Too far afield:-)

Best Regards,
Julia
