This is a serious concern all right. In fact I suspect that that is probably
the single reason that a group has not been formed even though we have been
talking about it for many months now. I dont have an answer to that one.
Maybe somebody on this list has close ties to other trade organizations or
know somebody on boards of executives of them. The societies that I mention
in todays earlier e-mail about stamps and coins surely have this problem
also. Finding out how they deal with that problem would probably help the
forming of a meteorite group a lot.
I think that I should comment on a statement made by Joel yesterday also -
about people having to do their own work in order to avoid being ripped of.
That is so true. All you have to do is look at the investment industry (Of
which is my profession) to see the problems of government (Or in that case a
government sanctioned department) to see the problems that arise when an
organization tries to protect consumers from themselves.
If a meteorite organization does get started it will be a marketing and
information organization. More importantly it will be a voice by collectors
and dealers (A true trade organization) and not a voice by scientists and
Nasa which have a different agenda and is the only meteorite voice that
there is right now. (Considering Canadas draconian meteorite laws I have
problems with that to but I wont discuss them here - not now anyway) It wont
be a "policing organization" as such. Considering the lack of financial
resources available to it that is the most that it could ask for anyway. Any
organization will surly fail if it tries to solve all of the problems. Even
the highly successful organizations that I mentioned this morning is not a
"policing" organization - they are collector service organizations, but they
do investegate fraudulant activities and work closely with the police.
What is really needed of course is to set up a non-profit government
sanctioned organization which should not be to hard - and the publicity
would not hurt either.
Anyway thats much more than my two cents worth again
Sincerely
DEAN
