BRILLANT BODY DROPS FRAGMENT NEAR POTTERTOWN

A flaming meteor made its spectacular way across the heavens last night and
went almost the length of Kentucky shaking windows in towns from
Madisonville to Murray.

It arrived over Murray at 2:13 this morning and brilliantly lit the sky for
as long as thirty seconds. Local residents ventured a number of reasons for
the phenomenon. Everything from lightning to some huge explosion were
forwarded as the explanation for the light and accompanying noise.

William Barnett found a piece of the meteor that measured seven inches in
diameter. He said that he found the piece near his father's home near
Pottertown on the other side of Poplar Spring Church. The piece fell on the
farm of E.C. Barnett.

Barnett said that he heard the noise of the meteor and woke up. He said he
went out into the yard and the meteor lit up the countryside with a bright
light. The piece fell near he and his father he said, and he brought it into
Murray this morning.

W.L. Farmer of Bethel said that the noise awoke him and he walked out on the
porch. The entire world seemed to be lit up he said, and the spectacle
defied description. The huge flaming body seemed to go up and down and
contained every color of the rainbow. The terrific noise accompanying the
meteor sounded as though a huge sheet of tin or metal was being shaken by
some force.

Mr. Farmer said that when he opened the door, his police dog was cowering
against the wall and bolted into the house when the door opened.

The entire house was lit up he said and after the lights disappeared the
noise started and rumbled for some time. Mr Farmer said that he wished
everyone could have seen the phenomenon. He said a first he did not know
what it was, but knew that is was not a man made thing. No man could produce
such a spectacle as that, he said.

He called the telephone operator to see if anything had been reported, and
received the answer that many calls had come in, but as of yet nothing had
been reported as to what it was.

The meteor is believed to have landed somewhere near Nashville, Tennessee
and is believed to be of huge proportions.

The piece of the meteor found by Barnett is on display at his service
station at the corner of Fifteenth and Main streets. The piece is about
seven inches in diameter and weighs about ten pounds. It has a burned look
about it. One side smooth and appears to have engrained in it, pieces of
sand or silica.
