                                Dimpled Eros

NEAR Shoemaker photographed the region southeast of the
large crater Psyche on December 8, 2000, from 179
kilometers (111 miles) above Eros. This end of the
asteroid features a large pair of craters that form a
prominent "dimple" -- an easy-to-spot landmark that
provides a clear reference point on the surface. The
picture covers a region about 6.6 kilometers (4.1 miles)
          across.

Built and managed by The Johns Hopkins University
          Applied Physics Laboratory, Laurel, Maryland,
NEAR-Shoemaker was the first spacecraft launched in
          NASA's Discovery Program of low-cost, small-scale
planetary missions. See the NEAR web site for more
          details (http://near.jhuapl.edu) .
