NEAR Shoemaker Becomes First Craft to Land on an Asteroid

The first spacecraft to orbit an asteroid has become the
first to land on one. At 3:07 p.m. EST today, NEAR
mission operators at the Johns Hopkins University
Applied Physics Laboratory confirmed that the NEAR
Shoemaker spacecraft had touched down on the surface of
asteroid 433 Eros, 196 million miles from Earth.

NEAR team members will listen through NASA's Deep Space
Network of antennas for a beacon that would indicate
NEAR Shoemaker has survived the touchdown.
