                                Mottled Eros

NEAR Shoemaker took this picture of Eros on January 8,
2001, from an orbital altitude of 34 kilometers (21
miles). The Sun, high overhead, subdues shadows and
brings out variations in the brightness of surface
materials. This illumination reveals several ring-shaped
bright patches, about 60 meters (200 feet) across, on
the inside walls of small craters. The whole scene is
about 1.4 kilometers (0.9 miles) across.

Built and managed by The Johns Hopkins University
          Applied Physics Laboratory, Laurel, Maryland,
NEAR-Shoemaker was the first spacecraft launched in
          NASA's Discovery Program of low-cost, small-scale
planetary missions. See the NEAR web site for more
          details (http://near.jhuapl.edu) .
