Subject: A Query

Hi...the following URL is to a eBay auction lot and I am curious as to =
its
authenticity...m

http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3D550293646

Mike:

The bowl itself appears reasonably authentic, but its interpretation as =
a meteor about to strike a mountain is highly unlikely. Much more =
likely (although by no means certain) is that of a depiction of a comet, =
possibly in relation to clouds or to the pillars of the sky (the =
so-called "mountain"). The structure of the "tail" is not like that for =
a meteor, but is strikingly similar to that for comets, such as depicted =
on the Bayeux Tapestry for the AD 1066 apparition of Comet Halley. The =
spiral in the center of the bowl may be a solar symbol. From the =
ceramic design style, I am uncertain as the approximate dating of the =
bowl, but suspect the 11th or 12th century.

Cheers, -----Bruce
