" On the sixteehth of June, sometime after seven in the evening, towards sunset, a cloud was seen passing from the east to the west of San Quirico at a distance of three or four miles, directly above Lucignan D'Asso and Cosona. It's main characteristics were: (1) the emission of sparks and missiles, (2) smoke, (3) extraordinary explosions, (4) red-hot rocks thrown to the earth. "

The above description is taken from a dissertation entitled: On a rock-shower fallen in the evening of June 16, 1794 by the abbot Ambrogio Soldani (1736-1808), and is an account of the bolide fall south-east of Siena on June 16, 1794, over an area of approximately 47 sq km.....It was Soldani who in 1794 first suggested that the rocks originated in space, but this theory proved too radical for the attitudes of the time, and was opposed by the majority of scientists......Siena is a nice chondrite LL5 brecciated and the total mass is only 3674.3 grams. A small point of interest: the Siena meteorites were the first to the exhibited in the British Museum, along with three other meteorites from Wold Cottage, Benares and L'Aigle. For see the complete history of the Siena meteorite go to the METEORITE! Magazine August 2000.RegardsMatteo
