SAINT SEVERIN
LL6
Mass : 271 Kg
Fall 1966, June 27
(Charente, France)
A slice with crust (5.59g) resulting from a partial slice (450.6g) of=20
the fragment F made in 1971 and carrying the number 2400A.
The fragment F, weighing 45 kg, was near the locality "Le=20
Pourboutou-La-Gabarre" at the bottom of a crater with vertical walls=20
crossing 1,50 m of clay, 0,15 m of peat and 0,20 m of limestone.
Here is the story of the fall :
June 27 1966 about 15h40 the inhabitants of the area of Saint-S=E9verin=20=

(Charente, France) heard a series of detonations and whistles which the=20=

witnesses compared to the passage of a fighter exceeding the speed of=20
sound. Little time after was found a stone of 113 kg in a crater of 60=20=

cm of depth and 80 cm diameter at the edge of a local road.
Two days later the national Natural museum of natural History of Paris=20=

dispatches on the spot a team of the Center of the low radioactivities=20=

of Gif-sur-Yvette. Sixty hours only after the fall of the meteorite the=20=

first measurements of radioactivity could begin on the found fragment.=20=

The meteorite broke in several fragments during the crossing of the=20
Earth's atmosphere. Thereafter, seven other fragments were found,=20
establishing the total weight of the fall to 271 kg. The various points=20=

of fall of these fragments are aligned East-West and distributed on a=20
distance of approximately 10 km.
