School is Moon struck
This Is Hertfordshire (United Kingdom)
April 23, 2003

Children at Fairfield Junior School in Radlett have been examining pieces of
Moon rock brought to Earth by NASA.

The pieces of rock were loaned to the school by Britain's Particle Physics
and Astronomy Research Council (PPARC), and were collected during NASA's
manned missions to the Moon during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Children
were allowed to handle pieces of a meteorite.

Fairfield School's headteacher, Doug Helsby, said: "We are very grateful for
the loan, which has helped bring our science lessons to life. PPARC tell us
that the first European mission to the Moon will be launched this year, when
an unmanned spacecraft will study the surface of the Moon. Perhaps some of
our youngsters have been inspired by this scheme to be the ones taking part
in a mission in a few years time."

PPARC loans the samples for free, and can be contacted on 01793 442030.
