Randy and list,

Randy wrote: "Bottom line is metal that does not attract a magnet is NOT =
a meteorite. End of story.''

I have a meteorite which I know is a real meteorite as it has crust and =
chondrules and was purchased from Dean Bessy. I picked it out of a =
large box of meteorites a few years ago.

I cut into this stone and found a metal inclusion which has an odd =
sheen. It has the look of aluminium or tin. This metal inclusion is =
quite large with the longest dimension being over 10mm. What amazed me =
about the metal, besides it's unique appearance, is that it is extremely =
weakly attracted to a magnet if at all. =20

A powerful rare earth magnet is attracted to the stone only slightly =
leading to a guess that the stone is an L type or even an LL type. When =
I move the magnet over the metal bleb it becomes less attracted to the =
stone. I believe that the attraction over the inclusion comes from the =
background attraction to the rest of the metal in the stone.

Here, once again after a few years, is a picture of this fragment. =
http://members.rogers.com/tett/metpics/NWA_metal.jpg=20

The size and appearance and magnetic weakness of this inclusion keeps me =
guessing. Anyone seen something similar?

Cheers,

Mike Tettenborn,
Owen Sound, Ontario

Same old story. Swears they saw it fall. Maybe even set the hay =
field on fire or was hot to the touch.

Bottom line is metal that does not attract a magnet is NOT a =
meteorite. End of story.
