Pitt professor finds meteorite in Argentina

     PITTSBURGH (UPI) - The University of Pittsburgh said today Dr. William
A. Cassidy, associate professor of geology, discovered an 18-ton meteorite
in north-central Argentina during a scientific exploration this summer.
     The school said the estimated weight of the find would make it the
sixth largest meteorite ever recorded. It is embedded about 15 feet in the
ground.
     The discovery was made at Campo del Cielo, a meteorite field located in
a semiarid plains known as the Gran Chaco, about 600 miles northwest of
Buenos Aires.
     Cassidy has explored the site every summer since 1963 when he was with
Columbia University's Lamont Geological Observatory. His work was funded by
the National Science Foundation.
