i lightly studied the bays in geo. school _at_ ga southern. there really is no explanation. we dug many trenches in the area and there is absolutely no layer differentiation in the surrounding sand at all. no glass has been found there or any other material suggesting impact. the peat on the bottom is about 10' thick in some and the biggest one i know of is in screven county and is 57 acres. possibly limestone subduction? who knows? i would like to know more too.
