Hello to the List,

I wanted to inform you that a new french meteorite has
been identified.

It's the first french hexahedrite, weighing only
14.9g.

It was found in 2004 near the city of Colmar (Alsace)
and was not identified at first as a meteorite. It was
placed in boxes along with several hot rocks and
pseudometeorites at the Planetarium of Epinal.

Then, in february 2005, a meteorite probably fell in
Alsace (which has not been found). The Planetarium of
Epinal made an exhibition to show people how to
recognize meteorites. Among the pseudo-meteorites
which were exhibited then, someone recognized the
14.9g piece as a meteorite. The Laboratory of
Strasbourg analyzed this piece and certified that it
was an hexahedrite.

The meteorite will be kept at the Planetarium of
Epinal.

I hope they will register it in the Meteoritical
Bulletin. It's name could be "Val d'Orbey", the place
where it was found...

Best regards,

Pierre-Marie PELE
