  DATE AND LOCATION
------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Workshop on Spacecraft Reconnaissance of Asteroid and Comet
Interiors will be held October 5-6, 2006, in Santa Cruz, California.
Oral and poster sessions will be held at the University Inn & Conference
Center, 611 Ocean Street, Santa Cruz CA 95060. Please visit
www.santacruz.org to learn more about Santa
Cruz. Note that the workshop is scheduled just before the 38th Annual
Meeting of the Division for Planetary Science to be held in Pasadena,
California, on October 8-13, 2006. Travel from Santa Cruz to Pasadena is
a one-hour flight or a scenic five-hour drive.

KEY POINTS:
Date: October 5-6, 2006
Location: Santa Cruz, California

  PURPOSE AND SCOPE
------------------------------------------------------------------------
We have entered an era of detailed spacecraft reconnaissance of
asteroids and comets, motivated by the hazards these objects can
present, by our curiosity about celestial neighbors from which most
meteorites derive, by our desire to understand how planets form from
smaller building blocks, and by visions for a human future in space. As
there is no scientific consensus for the deep interior properties of
comets and asteroids, we convene this workshop to come up with the
following ideas for the next stage of spacecraft reconnaissance:
observational instruments, surface instruments and rovers,
penetrometers, and active experiments that can tell us what we need to
know about these profoundly important objects.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
  WORKSHOP SCHEDULE
------------------------------------------------------------------------
We are tentatively planning ~30 talks (8 invited, 22 contributed) and
~30 posters in a setting that will include plenty of time for questions
and panel-moderated discussion. Invited talks will be requested on
overview science and key relevant mission results. Contributed talks and
posters will emphasize science requirements, mission concepts, and
specific ideas for instrument designs and operations, as well as
asteroid and comet mission and science results. The workshop will
produce a set of peer-reviewed papers and a set of workshop
recommendations.
