I use a super magnet n50 1x1x1/4 " attached to a 15/16 " nut I have a piece of rope tied to the thing and can coil it up and carry it anywhere. the super magnet can pull nails out of the ground pick up a 5# hammer or nearly jerk my arm out of its socket when i found a 2kg stone a few weeks ago. if you drag it in the gravel it knocks the less magnetic pieces off so I swing it back and forth just above the ground.
I use google earth to find spots near my home where the color of the ground shows a round patch of a different color than the surrounding earth. and search them. and near them.
I start near the top of a slope and work my way down as the heavier objects tend to stay put near the top and are not washed down hill as you would at first expect.
I have also tried a metal detector and have only found a few with one of them. as an example i can pass a $600 metal detector over a small paragould slice and not get a peep out of it ,but it easily sticks to the magnet passed over it.
to combine both of them you can put thin super magnets on your metal detector loop and it will still detect the metal and pick up small stones with the magnet. Any way you choose to look it is all fun to do!
  Have a great day!
  Steve
