I use a product called Barkeepers Friend to clean my iron slices after the
etching process and as a part of my regular maintenance.

I don't know why but it makes the etch pop, and it seems to protect it from
rust.


It is available at Wal-Mart for around $2.50 for a "Comet" sized can.
