Trail of lights probably a meteor

Posted 3 hours 35 minutes ago

An amateur astronomer says a trail of lights seen over Tasmania yesterday
afternoon was probably a meteor.

Tasmanian police fielded dozens of calls about 1.30pm yesterday from people
across the state who saw the lights heading south.

Paul Jackson has told ABC local radio it could have been some space junk such as
a piece of a satellite, but it's unlikely.

"There was certainly nothing gazetted for going down today, that's not to say
you don't get the odd piece of junk," Mr Jackson said.

"But it sounds like it was a rather large meteor that's broken up into the
atmosphere, and the pieces have been really low and lit up the sky," he said.
