I agree with Rob Matson:
 
West-to-east, long-lasting, slow-moving fireball" sounds like the description for a re-entry of man-made space-debris event.

Is it more than a coincidence that the Columbia Shuttle accident was 9 years ago to the day, AND that the path of the fireball was very close to that Shuttle's last flight path?

This fireball is a fitting tribute to the crew of the Columbia, or at least a reminder, lest we forget...
