Modern science is no slouch at persecution. Stand on a soap box and speak out against the no-threshold concept for toxins and radiation, statins, global warming (oops - climate change), decreasing polar bear population, or the viability of alternate energy. You'll get plenty of persecution. You won't be tortured to death, but it wont be from lack of desire - it's just because it's not so easy to do any more.
