Hi MikeG,
You are "old ebay school". Ebay now credits fees and they also turn dead beats over to an agency for collection. They will now ruin the sellers credit if they don't pay so, in the long run these scammers will pay one way or another. So, don't ever be afraid to buy anything on ebay.
