It will only get worse as a lot of people who are not normally involved with meteorites enter the market thinking there is some kind of money to be made.? This comes from the media throwing around big price tags that are not in sync with reality.? Large auction houses are part of the blame because they do not report failures, only successes and then the prices are many times inflated.? Every other class in the collectables sector as been influenced the same way so expect the problem to escalate.? The more media attention, the more harm that will come.

Add in the poor example that politicians set by lying to the public and that it is alright to scam people out of their hard earning money for their own personal legacy purposes and the outlook is bleak. ??

Bernie Madoff was an expert at telling lies to attract investors and went to prison for it only after enjoying years of popularity and money.? I think the same should happen to public "officials" that set a poor example by thinking it is alright to tell more lies to cover previous lies!?? I see no difference between the two other than politicians have immunity.

Now the senate wants online sellers including those who market on eBay to collect ~10% more taxes!? This will kill off those trying to make an honest living on line.

When will it stop?

Adam

Hi Mendy and all,

Your a conscientious collector and care about the fraud going on with
eBay and elsewhere. However despite people pointing out that certain
people are frauds, there are well known dealers who continue to sell,
trade and be friends with those who have misrepresented material to the
community in the past.

It is this type of association that bothers me. Why would you continue
to able someone who has been caught? Why can they sell or buy at all
from any dealers, collectors and so on? Money does funny things to
people. However if this gets out of hand (and I think it already has)
it could bring down the whole collecting/selling community.

As pointed out earlier, buy from well known dealers. Do research and
find out who has a good standing reputation. You can search the
meteorite list archives in order to find out problems of the past, and
keep tabs on future problems.
