There may be a restriction on certain species and the customs guy just
remembers one species of stingray from the CITES list. You still run a
risk. I am familiar with guitars being seized because the red or green
abalone or mother of pearl was misidentified at customs and deemed to be
protected white abalone. There is no right of appeal, the item is seized
and destroyed. I cross border with an Indian Rosewood guitar frequently
and the possibility that some customs 'expert' will decide it is brazilian
is a possibility, thankfully somewhat remote so far, as I haven't heard of
a case involving woods being misidentified.
