Re: Columbianites

Dear Kevin & fellow list members,
I have been out of town & just returned & was interested to see your
question, Kevin. Also, the two answers you recieved - "absolutely not
tektites" & "do not be so fast to absolutely rule them out" seem to sum
up the opinions currently held regarding these little gems.
I was fortunate in trading some exceptionally high grade small Allendes
for ALL of the remaining highest grade Columbianites the dealer in
Florida was willing to part with at the time. After keeping nearly half
of them for myself, I sold the remainder, making their dubious status
very clear to all buyers - they still sold out in the blink of an eye at
$8/g - and that was 2 or 3 years ago.
They are the only material I have seen that rival the highest quality
Moldavites in beauty. (of course, the Columbianites vary in texture,
forme, coloration, translucency, etc, but the very best lilac hued
"smokey quartz" coloration is utterly spellbinding!)
I do not know if they are tektites, but I keep them in my tektite
collection and consider them some of the very best material in the
collection. If your inquiry began with an opportunity to purchase one or
more of the better quality specimens, I would strongly encourage you to
do so. By the way, I found it VERY interesting that the fellow I
acquired them from had them catagorized as to quality - and I IN NO WAY
agreed with his tast. That oftem makes for VERY good transactions - for
both parties. (It also means that if your source is the same one, he may
well have some available that I would consider his very best).
	Best wishes, Michael
