Collectors

Hi list,

All said about the positive role of amateurs in meteoritics is more than obvious
and aplicable i think to most countries. It is the amateur who most times
differences a meteorite between common rocks, who discovers comets,
and others. But the role of the scientific community towards society or society groups in the US is different to other countries. In the US due to the large amateur tradition in many fields they have more than demostrated their value and envolvement to scientific comunity.

The attitude of this scientist as many others is propietary towards their discipline and
many times for them, who has not their trining or academic-institutional level is alien to them.

Here in Spain happens in a similar way like  Rob said in Collectors! since Monahans, part of this community is affraid that a meteorite could be falling or found in Spain an not given to them. So in many media they
said that any meteorite fell or found in Spanish country belongs to the Governemet! (the truth is that we don´t have a regulation yet).

I think all what happens is that these people aren´t able to adapt to
this new stage of interest of comon people into meteoritics and they act protective and closing attitude instead of an open one, because they think they will not control the situation.

But it is only a matter of time and european amateurs will in some years i hope show they usefullnes to the scientific comunity as well as the long US tradition has done.

This list is part of that involvement and ineterest.

Saludos, Patrick
