Re:FORTUNATE ACTIONS

This list now finally consists only of kind and very cultivated beings!
The question if this list (like any other) will have a fruitful presence on
the web and in the "mind" of this planet earth depends mainly on the so
called" signal-to-noise ratio " phenomena .
For the definitions and descriptors of signal-to-noise I largely depend on
my copy of the fifth edition of Van Nostrand's Scientific Encyclopedia
(1968) because it (and possibly later editions) is easily available in
libraries and schools. The basic definitions of the ratio will not have
changed since 1968, an never will. If at first the definitions seem
difficult, just carry on for all will become clear ahead.

SIGNAL: (1) An independent variable; (2) A visual, audible, or other
indication used to convey information; (3) The intelligence, message, or
effect to be conveyed over (or through) a communication system; (4) A
signal wave.

NOISE: Any undesirable sound. By extension, noise is any unwanted
disturbance within a useful frequency band, such as undesired electric
waves in any transmission channel or device. Such disturbances, when
produced by other services (or systems or sources) are called interference.
Noise is also accidental or random fluctuation in electric circuits due to
motion of the current carriers. From this concept of noise, the term is
used as an adjective to denote unwanted fluctuations in quantities that are
desired to remain constant (or clear and not interfered with.)

We can now shorten these definitions. "Signal" is the message or
information. "Noise" is whatever distorts, deforms, prevents, interferes
with, disorganizes, changes or aborts the signal down to the point where
the signal might not be locatable or received at all.

Anyone with a radio would be familiar with noise, calling it static. If the
picture on your TV is not coming in crystal clear, then some kind of noise
is interfering with it. Messages or information which are not clear and
precise are noisy ones.

The phrase "signal-to-noise ratio" thus refers to how much signal and how
much noise is present regarding just about anything and everything.

The full meaning of the signal-to-noise ratio, then, is that we live within
a signal-to-noise universe, or a signal-to-noise world, where the ratios
between the signals and the noise are of crucial and critical importance.
Messages posted to this list could be divided in 3 groups (some of course
are in between)
There are many people who really try to serve this outstanding list
(+Science and humanity) in giving useful data and hints or by putting
interesting questions,
Yet another group seems to use this list as they would call up regularly
some close friends (comments and questions like. "hey how is the weather
today in Germany").
Although this behavior shows a nice kind of atmosphere of familiarity it
costs the time of so many who are more curious for data they can use ,too.

Somebody may mention :"its not too much work to press the delete button;" .
This might be , too but what will be the future ?
You will need to delete nearly anything and how do you know you didn't
delete anything valuable.
Don't you need to read before you are sure you can delete a message?
With more right it should be said " It's not too much work to manifest
disciplin what you write !"
Ask your self : "Is what you intend to write of higher value; is it
important and helpful to others , or are my words sharp and aggressive ? "
Not to talk about individuals who try to make harm to others in public !
This last group is deleted already . They worked out of self ambitious
motives. These kind of individuals didn't want to contribute to the list
but only tried to use the list as a method to make money - sometimes at
expenses of list members.
Many so called special offers to members (sometimes in 5-digits) were
often priced twice as high as we and many others would be able to sell it
to anybody (D G 2 6 2 included!)
Tanks god this last group was (hopefully forever) deleted from the list by
very courageous and honorable Art. In our opinion this decision came a bit
late! -So many left bittered this list and the enthusiasm for the subject
meteorites already :
Many who sympathize with at least some of these 3rd group individuals might
cry "Where is the freedom of expression?'.
Those could be asked : Do you really care about the mission of this list
and are you meaning that really all messages on this list are of equal
value !

I think it would be a good idea to put up a mission and purpose statement
for our valuable list so it can move to where to cosmos wants the list to
move (and not be kept back by individuals who don't care about the lists
identity)!
(Note, - that there is no misunderstanding: Mr. Steve I guess belongs to
the 1st mentioned group as he tries to serve the list and its members).
"These stones from heaven are composed of love particles > let us be
thankful with passion to the one who creates them (and takes them back as
well at some precise point )Also let us be aware for the messages they
contain for us ! "
