Magnetite vs. fusion crust

Hello all,

Thanks for the help on the petrologic grade question. Another question comes
to mind. Could someone please explain the relationship between magnetite due
to weathering (weathering does cause a coat of magnetite on irons, doesn't
it?) and fusion crust on an iron. I mean, over time does the fusion crust
"break down," is it replaced by magnetite, does magnetite "grow over" the
crust, or what?

I am currently cleaning a well rusted and corroded Campo del Cielo. It is not
easy but it is fun. Given the length of time this one has been on the planet,
I assume that every bit of fusion crust has weather away and the black surface
underneath the rust (yes, it's really there) is magnetite. Correct?
