Hi Matt, thanks for the reply, I have encountered the type of concretion you describe with sand or silt in the core of an iron sphere found somewhere in Utah. I haven't sliced one of the very small rusty spheres because I've only found a few in the past couple of years and didn't want to destroy a possible rareity. I think they are solid though.
