RE: Griffith Observatory: Meteorite & Tektite Collection

I whole-heartedly agree. The displays at the Griffith are superb (and
very educational, which is fortunate, considering the great numbers of
people that visit this Observatory).

Yes, the Old Woman display is interesting AND there are five Lucerne
Valley meteorites on display, but the Old Woman was found in the San
Bernardino Mountains just to the south of Lucerne Valley and is named
after the canyon in which it was found. (see photo in Norton's "Rocks
from Space")

Some images of CA meteorites on display at the Griffith can be viewed at
my web page:

(Sorry about it still being under construction, but this is "field work
season" for me right now;-)

I recently saw the excellent meteorite and tektite exhibit at the
Griffith Observatory and Planetarium in Los Angeles, Calif. and highly
recommend it! There's an interesting display about the Old Woman
meteorite found on the Lucerne Dry Lake in California. Several superb
splash-form and Muong Nong tektites--from the Darryl Futrell
Collection--are also prominently placed.
