Fireball versus bolidi

Hello listies,

This is not excatly about meteorites but I think that someone of listies can
answer to me about this.

Ron Baalke forwarded some times ago "Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
About Fireballs and Meteorite Dropping Fireballs" article by The American
Meteor Society to this list.

I found out that my knowledge about terms "fireball" and "bolide" was
different that in that article. In matter of fact I found out that I´m not the
only one.

>1. What is a fireball? What is the difference between a fireball and a
>bolide?
>
>A fireball is another term for a very bright meteor, generally brighter
>than magnitude -3 or -4, which is about the same magnitude of the planet
>Venus in the morning or evening sky. A bolide is a special type of fireball
>which explodes in a bright terminal flash at its end, often with visible
>fragmentation.
(From: The American Meteor Society, Ltd.Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) About
Fireballs and Meteorite Dropping Fireballs Version 1.2)

I have always thought that fireball and the bolide are the same things without
any differences. I thought that fireball can call as a bolide no matter does
it explode or not.

So, can anyone tell me if that explanation of AMS is somehow official?

Regards,
Jarmo
