Re: No Selling At Show

Hi List,

Here is the message but will leave out E-mail address and name so there isn't a
bunch of hate mail or what ever sent there way. I will forward any mail in
defense of selling at such conventions both pro and cons so they hear a balanced
arguments.

Dear Mr. Mitterling,

We are holding our latest astronomy club convention, Hidden Hollow '98, on Sept.
19th and I have been trying to reach you before you might make any plans for a
spontaneous trip out here as a vendor. I have just now discovered your address
on the internet.

Our club board of directors in the planning stages for the convention made the
decision to strongly discourage meteorite sales at the convention and all
invitations sent to dealers, including those handling various merchandise,
expressed that policy. The board's sentiments on that subject have to do with,
among other things, controversy involving imports, thefts
of collections, spiraling speculation in the meteorite market that threatens
scientific study and places these items in the domain of
gemstones. Many see the use of these items in jewelry and knife blades akin to
processing rare fossils into expensive nick-nacks. I am sure there are
differing opinions on this, and I am not writing to you to be malicious or
anything, but just to say we have some firm feelings about this.

Needless to say, this is not the sort of thing a dealer specializing only in
meteorites wants to hear, and all I can say is that our club wants this applied
to all such sales and not to anyone specific dealer. I don't know that we have
any legal right to outright ban meteorite sales at our convention, but we have
made our feeling known openly to vendors.

I am well aware that you have attended and supported our convention in the past
and that particularly makes this a difficult letter to write. I felt that you
should be informed directly of our decision in case you decide to make the trip
here as a vendor unawares. We don't want any awkward surprises for you and it
would be nice to avoid grumbling from other vendors who agree not to bring
meteorites. Feel free to communicate with me if you like.

Sincerely,
