Re: Meteorite Economics -- 1929

In a message dated 18/09/98 04:53:55 BST, you write:

<< The desire
on the part of collectors to secure representatives of the
fullest possible number of falls has not only led them to bid
prices foolishly high but has caused a stone--if of only
moderate size--to be broken into bits and so widely distributed
that it has been impossible in later years to secure enough for
   study. >>

Hi all,

I'm just wondering if this is a sweeping statement by one individual from the
past, or is it the current view held by the scientific community about
meteorite collectors?
I've been accused of witholding meteorites from scientific investigation in
the past -"keeping them from scientists" was the broadcast quote, but I know
for sure that there's nothing in my collection that hasn't been freely
available to anyone before I obtained them.

Does anyone know of any specimens that have been broken into such small pieces
and so widely distributed among private collectors as to cause problems for
future study? Should we hang our heads in shame?

Rob.
