I have just received Harry Y. Mc Sween, Jr.´s book "Meteorites and Their
Parent Planets (second edition)", a brandnew paperback from Cambridge
University Press (ISBN 0-521-58751-4). This is following up a hardcover
edition of the book which was first published in 1987.
Fascinating reading, fine illustrations and photo-reproductions, many if
not most of them new! This is a book from a renowned scientist which I
would recommend to anyone who (e.g.) also likes O. R. Norton´s very
popular "Rocks from Space".
In the author´s own words from the preface to the 2nd edition:
"...In preparing this thoroughly revised second edition, I have been
astounded at how much has happened to meteoritics during the intervening
time. The isolation and the characterization of stardust in chondritic
meteorites, recognition of new classes of meteorites in Antarctic
collections, the first spacecraft encounters with asteroids, new models
that address the thermal and collisional histories of meteorite parent
bodies, application of high-resolution chronometers to date early solar
system events, a controversial hypothesis that a Martian meteorite
contains evidence for extraterrestrial life, calculations revealing how
meteorites trek from parent bodies to Earth, Hubble Space Telescope
images of battered planetesimals - these are just a few of the exciting
discoveries that have revolutionized this field..."
This book, in my opinion, is certainly worth its price of US$ 24.95.
