<So, to what degree ARE meteorites "pieces of stars" in a
literal sense and to what degree is that more a more
 "poetically" accurate statement?>

Hello Michael

It is just as accurate to say meteorites are pieces of
the stars as it is accurate to say that your car is a piece
of the stars. Both are technically correct.
The big bang theory produces hydrogen and I believe
helium. Everything else up to element 26, iron, is produced
in the normal functioning of the stars. Elements beyond
iron are produced in nova and super nova explosions. So
that gold wedding band was once part of a huge explosion,
and that was before your wife caught you slipping it off
your finger.
The elemental composition of meteorites comes from dead
stars. The meteorites themselves are remnants of star
formation in our solar system and primarily resided in
the asteroid belt before coming to earth.
