Steve and group:

I doubt it's an "official" definition, but I always took "main mass" to
mean the largest RECOVERED piece. That seems to make sense, especially
in terms of mapping the strewn field. If the term "main mass" might
take on a new meaning every time a piece is cut, then the definition
becomes pretty fluid and more difficult to apply, doesn't it?
