Tom and List,
Current laws on the books do not apply to circumstances in the past. When
Barringer applied for the mining claim, the laws that were applicable at
the time were used and were valid. If someone were to apply for a similar
mining claim today, it could be challenged under the current law. If the
meteorite community wants to fight to have Meteor Crater transferred to
public lands status, a different approach will be required.
