Most of the units well do the job. They just find your
position using the distance away from 3 satalites so
the technology is pretty standard. You should be OK if
you buy a Garmin as they are pretty durable and have
good reception in poor areas like forested or heavy
cloud cover.
The one thing to take into account is some GPS units
only track northern hemisphere satilites so make sure
you get southern satalites also.
Check how many waypoints they store also and some can
download info into a computer and some cant.
You want a back light for at night and battery time
might be a consideration (Although this is hard to
guage as the manufacturers battery life numbers are
ideal controled conditions and they never hold up in
real life - anybody ever get 8 hours out of a notebook
for example).
You might want to see if you like the feel of the
buttons maybe.
Otherwise read the instruction manual because there is
a lot to using a GPS. They do a lot more than you
realize - plan routes, track past routes ect.
One consideration for meteorite hunters that the GPS
manufactureres dont take into account is that
sometimes people take photos of the GPS in field next
to the meteorite in as found condition before they
move it. As such you want bright clearly visible
letters that well show up on your digital camera.
Cheers
