Aloha Ray,
cc: IMCA, meteorite community at large

Lets not lose hope or lay blame. Although Martin?s email was published 18 hours ago, it is the weekend, and most people may be out enjoying the days off with family and friends. That IMCA has not responded is disheartening.

You have struck on something that seems prevalent in the world at large. Apathy. Its easy to sit back and let someone else do the good work, while enjoying the fruits of their efforts. This happens corporately too, and even in science. Many observatories have folded their outreach offices and laid off or reassigned their staff, and I myself have fallen under the axe of unemployment as my former office of Science Education and Public Outreach falls silent. Despite these dire circumstances, we must soldier on and do the good work. I joined my compatriots at CFHT and Keck a few weekends ago for their Solar System Walk (unattended by my former employer of course) and was happy to carry the torch of meteorite outreach in the Asteroid Belt booth.

With respect to educational public outreach, its all about heart and what your motives are in life. Whether to take whatever you can get before moving on, or paying it forward in gratitude for all that has been given to you by others. I choose the latter because my life has been made rich and full by the selfless efforts of others. That through my actions, a small contribution can be made to the advancement of others for the purpose of extending the passion that we all share for our beloved interlopers from outer space. To show others the beauty of space rocks, and explain the body of knowledge they have bestowed to science in mankind?s quest for truth.

No, we cannot depend on others to do, whether government, industry or organization, what is right in the world. That has to be executed by the individual, driven by the desire to give back, and perpetuate what we love to the next generation. Peace.
