Re: underwater meteorites




meteorites have indeed been recovered from the water following impact.
among the more renowned examples is the aubrite pena blanca springs which
splashed into a little pond in front of some ranch hands.  (and as pena
blanca is water soluble it's most fortuitous that it was recovered moments
following impact). 

at terminal velocity, hitting the water is much like hitting a brick
wall...so the cushioning effect one might expect doesn't really exist.
